Inside BBSAwards 2019 – One Day with Breaks Rune Recordings - Interview

Thanks for your time Rune Recordings!

1. What Are Some Words You Would Use To Describe This Year?

Dima ‘RUNE’: Breakbeats Revival. I see positive trends in the reincarnation of style in a new generation of producers and DJs in the UK, USA, Netherlands, Germany, and Eastern Europe. Not sure that this applies specifically to nuskool breaks, but definitely breakbeat music in general.

As a record label, we love the “true” breaks, but we also follow contemporary labels and artists in electro and leftfield techno, which inspire us and give us hope that a new wave will cover the genre.

2. What Have Been Some Of The Highlights For The Label?

Dima ‘RUNE’: The main achievement is the top-charting release, among breaks releases, for two full weeks, as well as the 29th place in the Beatport cross-genres chart. It was the debut Infinity EP of American artist Dadmom.

It was also great to get a remix from our favorite producer BETA. His work has always been praised by progressive breaks fans and his remix is the best-selling track in the label catalog in 2019.

3. What’s In Store For 2020?

Dima ‘RUNE’: We have great plans for 2020 since the label will be 10 years old. We will start with the release from our new San Francisco residents, Dadmom & Haelix, who make fresh and deep breaks. Then we will release a remix album for Mechanical Pressure tracks from such producers as Kid Digital, Quadrat Beat, Future Funk Squad, Peter Paul, Borka FM, etc. We are also working on the second breaks album of our leading resident Nelver.

In addition, we promote breaks at parties in my hometown of Kiev. And we plan to loudly mark the 10th anniversary of RUNE Recordings among the residents and fans of the label this summer.

4. What Made You Decide To Create a Record Label?

Dima ‘RUNE’: It's a long story, but I think I had no choice not to do it. Should pay tribute to the mastermind of that process - Alex ‘Parallax Breakz’, with whom we launched RUNE Recordings in 2010.
Initially, I was an artist manager for Parallax Breakz, signing his releases for labels like Scarcity, Ego Shot, etc. But over time, we decided to launch our own label and began preparing the first releases. The first six months were quite successful for us, and RUNE Recordings was recognized as the best label according to the "Progressive, Deep and Melodic Breaks Polls Awards - 2011", which we learned about after the vote. Such recognition motivated us to make more quality releases.

5. How Did You Come Up With The Name?

Dima ‘RUNE’: Actually, this is Alex’s idea. At that time, he was fond of Slavic runes and chose the Ingus rune for the label logo. It was symbolic and suitable for starting a new label. Inguz means positive changes in life, which is in line with the spirit of RUNE Recordings at the entry to the industry.

6. What Was The First Album That You Ever Bought?

Dima ‘RUNE’: Speaking of breakbeat music in general, it was The Prodigy - ‘The Fat of the Land’ (XL Recordings). And if you take into account nuskool breaks, then one of the most memorable was Dan F - ‘Multistory’ (Disuye) and Mesmer - ‘Furious Fish’ (Sound Of Habib). I'm generally a fan of not very popular, but cool artists, for example, in the style of progressive & deep breaks. The unique style of the producer is very important to me, not just his popularity and production quality.

7. What Album Are You Most Proud Of In Your Label?

Dima ‘RUNE’: I can’t single out just one, because I love everything we worked on with the label team. But perhaps the five most powerful:

Andrew Philippov - Revolving Around Us
Sergei Orange - The Newer World
Nelver - RUNE Attack LP
Mechanical Pressure - Contact LP
Borka FM - Transformation LP

Each of these albums is not only a compilation of disparate tracks but a conceptual story. Therefore, before listening, read the description and then click play.

8. In Your Years In The Music Business, What Is The Best Thing About Being Involved With It And The Worst?

Dima ‘RUNE’: I hope we will be involved in the best projects such as cooperation with advertising agencies, video games or movie production companies. At the moment, we were offered to sell the label with all the artists and music rights. The amount of the transaction was not so high to sacrifice an integral part of our lives. That was the weirdest offer at the same time. :)

9. What’s Your Most Memorable Experience Inside The Label?

Dima ‘RUNE’: The most impressive experience is system communication, crisis management and agile project management. I think that we are in great shape now to achieve the best results, which can not be said about the style of breaks at all. We have earned recognition for our hard work and the advancement of our sound. And this is much more valuable than the charts, although thanks to our fans for support. :)

10. What Does Your Day-To-Day Look Like?

Dima ‘RUNE’: I want to emphasize that for us, RUNE Recordings is a professional hobby and not the primary source of income. We make quality releases but earn for living in other areas and projects.

If we talk about the label, the framework looks extremely simple and loop:

> checking inboxes and responding to messages
> communicating with artists on current and future releases
> transferring upcoming releases to mastering and approving sound quality with the artists
> creating a cover design and uploading the release to the distributor's website
> preliminary promotion and promo campaign on the release date.

This is a continuous workflow, but the most important thing is communication within the team and with the artists whom we support along the way to the release. Each release is considered a new project that is being worked on by at least five people: the artist himself, label management represented by Art ‘Clandestine’, Jen ‘Corcyra’, and Dima ‘RUNE’ and our highly professional mastering engineer Dima ‘Under This’. In a few words, that’s how it works.

11. When Looking Into Potential New Artists To Sign, What Are Some Of The Qualities That You Find Exciting?

Dima ‘RUNE’: The A&R function is one of the most important in our label, but in recent years we have received so many demos that we have to refuse in 90% of cases. Like other imprints, we have our home residents on whom we are focused for 5-10 years. These are Nelver, Sergei Orange, Mechanical Pressure, and now - Borka FM, Dadmom and Windom R.

It’s easy to notice from our catalog that we don’t chase “top” names, but we are actively promoting our own and new artists. We sign works from newcomers if they conceptually fit our view of breaks, sound original and of high quality for the release. We often give a chance for a debut, but also see how the community reacts to the music of the new artist. If it's okay, then we continue cooperation by mutual agreement.

12. Do You Have Any Advice To Offer Up To Incoming Artists / Djs / Bands?

Dima ‘RUNE’: Yes, I have a point. Entering breaks music, do not build high expectations. Think about what you can give to this style before taking something from it.

Breaks is a unique genre in which self-expression is much more important than instant hype and imaginary chart positions. Try to make your music meaningful to the people who hear it.

13. Is There Anything Else That You Would Like To Share With Our Readers About The Records?

Dima ‘RUNE’: Remember that a label is a brand. It should have a mission, values and distinctive features. It’s worth thinking about it at the very beginning and sticking to strategy and tactics all the way, given the changes in the music industry and a particular genre.

Follow and share Breakbeats. Worldwide.

Inside BBS Awards 2019 - One day with Basschimp - Interview

Inside BBS Awards 2019 - One day with Basschimp - Interview

Hello Basschimp!
Thank you so much for taking time to do an Interview with us .

What are some words you would use to describe this year (2019)?

Honestly 2019 has been a really tough year for me.  I'm pleased with the music I've put out this year, but otherwise it's been a bit of a rough ride.  I'm hoping next year will be better, and hopefully with more & better music too!

Can you tell us what you like best about your favorite track produced in 2019?

Well I'm a real fan of the blues/glitch hop sound and I finally made a track I'm really proud of in that space, featuring one of my friends on guitar.  Should be coming out next year.

Can you tell us about the new project you will be working on in 2020?

I've formed a drum & bass duo project with DJ Prime Cuts who's a good friend of mine.  We're called Lethal Combination and we should be playing a few festivals & releasing our first EP next year.

Imagine walking inside the studio; please, can you speak to me through a typical day? What are your habits?

Haha, a typical day is me trying to convince myself to work on music.  I really struggle to motivate myself and that's the main barrier.  It's hard fitting in producing alongside the day job when DJing and stuff has been so slow over the past year or two.  Generally I sit down with a specific idea in mind to finish a track or work on a new idea.  I keep a list of all my ideas online and work on them when I can.

How will you choose the software and add-ons you use?

I always use Ableton and I enjoy Massive & Serum.  I also have Komplete so I use Rounds and Kontakt from there.  Between those things I can usually get the sounds I want, so I dont really "choose", I just work.

Are you an avid believer of learning an instrument?

Yes, I think it's better to be familiar/expert with less tools than vague with lots of tools, and I think that's quite widely accepted.

What is the only piece of DJ / production equipment that you can not live with?

That I can't live with?  Or that I can't live without?

Can't live with: nothing Im pretty easy going.
Can't live without: headphones!  Got a new pair this year (B&W P7s) and have really brought back my enjoyment of casual listening

So what are your thoughts on technology aiding the technique of DJing?

I think technology and music have always intersected & driven one another.  Look at e.g. hip hop & the sampler/drum machine, synth pop, dubstep & soft synths.  DJing is the same.  Mixes that are commonplace nowadays would have been impossible on 2 deck vinyl.  Crowds are getting more used to complex seamless mixing and I think it would be hard to replicate that without modern technology.

Any artists / DJs / producers in particular that really influenced you?

So many!  Hong Kong Ping Pong really opened my eyes to multigenre.  JFB always makes me wish I was a turntablist.  Stickybuds' Fractal Forest mixes are masterpieces in selection & preparation.  Hellfish, Weasel Busters for the high energy vibe.  Hixxy both as a DJ and a producer.  On the pure producer side I really like Skope for glitch hop I still think no-one else has really topped him.  Stickybuds' new album is fantastic as well.

What is the music scene like at this moment in your country?

It's great!  DNB has never been more popular and that's awesome to see.  Shindig has created a real home for breaks & funk/bass in the UK which is great for me as I'm real supporter of that scene.  UK also has a great rave scene.  I do miss the hardcore though, but that's still around in the North :)

Often, certain cities are related to certain sounds and sub-genres. Do you think that living in your city is reflected in your music?

I think so, yes.  Often when I'm collabing with friends they say I'm always trying to make it too ravey.  Guess that's what you get growing up in Brighton always chasing the next free party.  I do envy the Bristol scene as there's a lot more on the glitch/ghetto funk sound over there.  Still, love Brighton & would be honoured if people thought my music reflected any of my favourite city :)

Inside BBSAwards 2019 – One Day with Diesel Recordings- Interview

Nu School Breaks, Tech Breaks, Deep Breaks, Bass & Booty Breaks.
Diesel Recordings
Breakbeat label delivering Nu School Breaks, Tech Breaks, Deep Breaks Bass & Booty Breaks by top quality producers.
Sub genres: DRUM&BASS, HOUSE, BASS HOUSE

Thanks for your time Diesel Recordings!

What Are Some Words You Would Use To Describe This Year?

For Diesel Recordings it’s been a great year, we have showcased so much new talent and music on
the label and made so many new friends, overall 2019 has been a very good year for Breakbeat.
What Have Been Some Of The Highlights For The Label?
It is hard to pick just one highlight as we have had so many this year. We will keep working on
releasing top quality music and expanding our team. Having this great team of producers and DJs
working with our label is one of best things that has happened to us.

What’s In Store For 2020?

More amazing new music. We have some outstanding releases waiting to drop in 2020, a few albums
and hopefully our first event. We will continue to give the world incredible new music every week.

What Made You Decide To Create Record Label?

We just love music a lot, breaks especially. Between us we play regular shows on NSB Radio and
already had a label so we thought it would be a great idea to expand our music collection. We work
with a fantastic team of producers (some of them we knew before we launched Diesel Recordings)
and we thought it would be great to show them some more support by playing and releasing their
tracks. Running a label is time consuming but we love being busy like that.

How Did You Come Up With The Name?

This is a funny story. We wanted to launch a label releasing powerful, quality music. There were a few
names we put into the pot, but we really like .... Diesel sneakers, hence, Diesel Recordings. Diesel to
us = comfort and power/raw energy and this is what we want on our label; we want our producers to
feel comfortable and to always be open with us.
We hope our artists are happy with our cooperation and we have no doubts that our releases are
powerful and energetic!

What Was The First Album That You Ever Bought?

Bassica's first albums was Iron Maiden & The Doors and Bobalino's first album was Beat Street OST
and the early Electro's on tape (Now I sound really old !!!!).

What Album Are You Most Proud Of In Your Label?

Feel free to ask us this question next year. We are planning on releasing a few albums in 2020.
We released a great compilation in 2019 that had a few producers collaborating on tracks and the
outcome was refreshing and forward thinking.

We want to thank Alt-A, Prato, Mariion Christiian, Entheogen (Boundless Frequencies), Kayshan, A-
Sekond, Rage King, DRKWTR, Stromlinie and Nikola for their work. You guys rock!

In Your Years In The Music Business, What Is The Best Thing About Being Involved With It
And The Worst?

Best thing in the music business is getting to hear brand new music every week.
Being in this scene really connects people from around the world and it's a beautiful feeling to know
so many people who are on the same wavelength in life and music.
The good stuff outweighs all the little glitches that come with running a label.

What’s Your Most Memorable Experience Inside The Label?

The most memorable experience was launching Diesel Recordings. We experience new and exciting
things every day. We are constantly learning and thinking how to push the label forward.
We are excited about our team, our supporters, our tracks, the feedback we get; our dream is coming
true and we are so grateful and humble, and this is something we will never forget, thank you.

What Does Your Day-To-Day Look Like?

When we are not running the label, we have regular day jobs...boring huh? but it pays the bills.
We get up, have a shower, have a cup of coffee, check emails, talk to producers and DJs, listen to
demos, keep an eye on deadlines, releases, mastering, promotion and million other things and then
we get on with our regular jobs.
Running a label takes a lot of time & effort but it is a great experience and very much worth it, as long
as it's fun and we love what we do then we will always be happy. We like our regular jobs and we love
running the label, Lucky us! We also have various hobbies; we like long walks on the beach, dj'ing,
making music, travelling, socialising and of course partying.

When Looking Into Potential New Artists To Sign, What Are Some Of The Qualities That You
Find Exciting?

We don’t just release music for ourselves, we always think about our followers when signing a new
artist. Diesel Recordings has a very experienced team of producers, so it is easy to sign their tracks
as they never disappoint with their productions. We also encourage new and upcoming artists; the
door is always open to new producers. We release various styles of Breakbeat so if there is a spark in
the track, we will sign it or if we hear some great potential in a new artist, then we will help them in
any way we can.
Sometimes it is also the personality; openminded, reliable and hardworking producers will always be
part of the Diesel family.

Do You Have Any Advice To Offer Up To Incoming Artists/Djs/Bands?

Make the music you love, don't try to emulate others, it's ok to find inspiration from others but try to
find your own style and don't be scared to take risks, if you take more risks you will stand out from the
crowd.

Is There Anything Else That You Would Like To Share With Our Readers About The Records?

We would like to thank all our producers, Djs, followers, sharers, and buyers who keep us going with
their continued support.
We love you guys; thank you for making our dream come true! We promise to go to the next level in
2020 and spoil you with much more amazing music.

Thank you, BBS Awards, for having us.
Peace, Much Love & Beats .

Inside BBS Awards 2019 - One day with Jim Funk - Interview

Hello Jim Funk!
Thank you so much for taking time to do an Interview with us .

What are some words you would use to describe this year (2019)?

Building and recharging.

Can you tell us what you like best about your favorite track produced in 2019?

I would have to say Dirty People was one of my favorites to make this year I have really found myself in the darkness and simplicity of music. I have grown to love and enjoy sweeps and pitch bending sounds with dark and dirty bass lines. I spent half the Year just in sound design. I can’t wait for some of my new sounds to shine in 2020.

Can you tell us about the new project you will be working on in 2020?

I am currently working on a lot of free remixes and even more originals. I plan on dropping just as many free songs as I do originals in 2020. While I continue to build this new album. I am extremely excited about a new dark song I made called thru the trees releasing on Gigabeat records.

Imagine walking inside the studio; please, can you speak to me through a typical day? What are your habits?

Everyday is different and I try and let the energy guide me. Some days are just do sound design. Some days are organizing. Some days are just searching, in genres for ideas. When I am actually working on a track I almost always layout the basic drums first and move strait to the vocals. When I get my basic layout I then begin to truly build the song. I always try and let the song tell me what it wants. It’s almost like most my ideas come from somewhere else. I love to just listen and let it guide.

How will you choose the software and add-ons you use?

I sit and research new vsts and daw updates almost daily but, to be honest I have had my favorite vsts and daws for years. Truly they are almost all the same. It is best to just pick one and learn everything you can about it. Then start building folders of sounds you make and never stop.

Are you an avid believer of learning an instrument?

Yes I believe anything you do to help grow you as a artist is very important. I believe we are always growing and everyday is a learning experience. So never settle and never stop.

What is the only piece of DJ / production equipment that you can not live with?

My computer.

So what are your thoughts on technology aiding the technique of DJing?

I believe we can’t stop it and it is best to embrace the now and start thinking outside the box. So you standout from the crowds. In the end of the day it’s all about making the best music for people you can so, bring it on.

Any artists / DJs / producers in particular that really influenced you?

Truthfully all, people, artist, djs, dancers, ect influence me. Everything I have seen or heard has helped to make who I am as a artist and will continue. I wouldn’t be anything without all of you.

What is the music scene like at this moment in your country?

It seems to be trying to find itself again. I see a lot of older artist coming back into the game. Which I think is amazing. Definitely can’t wait for the industry to get this streaming stuff under wraps.

Often, certain cities are related to certain sounds and sub-genres. Do you think that living in your city is reflected in your music?

Of course. I truly believe like I spoke about earlier everything around you help to make you who you are. I remember being around 15 when my sister spoke about how much she disliked a strait beat Aka house music and to be honest because of that conversation I still feel the same way. House music is great for a journey but I believe broken beats are the way to my heart.
