In Conversation with CHRIS RØYAL
A Resident of Brisbane Australia, Royal & his signature bass sound have captured the attention of the music industry at large. Royalty Records., a record label pioneered by Royal himself, has recently launched, and is receiving an overwhelmingly positive response. The label aims at sourcing previously un-earthed artists, giving them a platform to launch from.
Royal has worked with some of the best the scene has to offer, supporting Australian acts such as Tigerlilly, Timmy Trumpet & Will sparks and international heavy weights like Boombox Cartel...Just to name a few.
Royal prides himself on playing for the crowd - a crowd that is always strong in numbers and brimming with enthusiasts keen to hear his heavy bass lines. Since signing to Jump Touring, Royal has hit the ground running, mastering his unique sound and generating interest internationally. In a recent interview with Nest HQ, industry legend Krafty Kuts tipped the producer as one to watch in the future.
Unsurprisingly, demand for the bass hard-hitter is rising rapidly as he casts his eyes to International waters.

Today I have been joined by super DJ and producer DJ CHRIS RØYAL.

Can you tell us what you like best about your track? I love the mix of old school and new school sounds. it was the driving force behind this remix.
Can you tell us about the new project you will be working on in 2019? Over the past few years i have grown a real strong love to all kinds of bass music. Breaks, trap and the hard stuff.. i dont really want to just make one style as i enjoy producing all types of music but, after last year i have grown a rather large breaks following. so i think this year i will be focusing a lot on that genre.
Imagine walking inside the studio; please, can you speak to me through a typical day? What are your habits?
i work out of 2 different spaces. 1)
At home at my home studio, 2) at a proper set up recording space. i tend to use the one at home more as i feel more comfortable.
A typical day in the studio would consist of Coffee (Most importantly) and a lot of hours listening to the same loop over and over again.
a few people ask me about what i do to start my studio sesh. i usually start by making some sounds and doing some sound design.
The secrete to a good day in the studio is productivity. a few years ago i set up a basic template. i did this because i love to work fast and i felt that i was wasting so much time adding in all my channels and everything when i started a new song/remix. so i came up with a way to just open Ableton and everything was already there. all i had to do was add all my sounds and start the track. it saves so much time and helps your productivity in the studio.
How will you choose the software and add-ons you use?
I choose my plugins depending on what style of music i am making. i really enjoy Serum, and Sylenth. they are my 'Go To' plugins.
Are you an avid believer of learning an instrument?
ABSOLUTELY!! I was blessed that at a young age my father put a guitar in my hands. it has helped me understand alot about what is in key and what is not and basic scales and chords. i am currently learning how to work my way around a piano.
this day in age, you dont need any music ability to be able to write music (Which is fine) but, i would definitely encourage learning an instrument. it has helped me!
What is the only piece of DJ / production equipment that you can not live with?
My microphone and my novation keyboard.
So what are your thoughts on technology aiding the technique of DJing and Music Production?
I think it is very, very exciting. i am really looking forward to the future of electronic music. the possibilities are endless.
Any artists / DJs / producers in particular that really influenced you?
Growing up i listened to a lot of bands and solo artists as i played guitar. it wasn't until i turned 18 and was introduced to the nightclub environment that i really fell in love with electronic music. listening to the Presets, bloody beetroots, Justice and all the Australian Ministry of Sound albums really introduced me to this type of music and i haven't looked back since. don't get me wrong, i still really love listening to bands but nothing gets me going like a club banger!
These days i'm influenced by a lot of different artists... Diplo, wuki, skrillex, 4B, Krafty Kuts, Marten horger, Michael Sparks and the list goes on. i find it hard to listen to music and NOT get inspired to be honest.
What is the music scene like at this moment in your country?
Very diverse. i find i am playing a lot of different styles when i play around the country. but house and bass music seem to be the genres leading the charge here at the moment.
Often, certain cities are related to certain sounds and subgenres. Do you think that living in your city is reflected in your music?
A few years ago, i would say YES 100% my city reflected me as an artist an my music but now, not so much. We have had a shift in sound here but, in saying that it is still very diverse. we have a lot of different parties that cater to all types of music.
I love my city regardless. i'm surrounded by some amazing artists that are all pushing boundaries with their music and style.
Chris has just been booked to play a Breaks based Festival in Spain in mid June!
