Inside BBSAwards – One Day with Funky Flavor Music- Interview

Thanks for your time FFM!
Now that we are almost at the end of 2017, what are some words you would use to describe this year?

Scotty: Aggressive, Bold, Never underestimated, Consistent

Renato: Truly Blessed and it Flew By...

Timothy: Great Music and Production   Family Time

What have been some of the highlights for the label?

Scotty: Taking FFM from a Brand that hosted Mixes and Shows..to a World Wide record label. From it`s inception till now, we have and always will Honor the true pioneer of BB Rick West. He is the Reason it started and will Continue. R.I.P Rick West.

Timothy: Definitely having 4 or more tracks in the beatport top 100 for several months at a time. Also having a label has had us involved with some pretty amazing shows over the past few years.

Renato: Staying In Top 10 for 4 months with Heart Player Colombo.  Working with Colombo on a couple of Projects. And working with New Artists..like JRok and Nerve

What’s in store for 2018 for Funky Flavor Music?

Timothy: In 2018 we will be gearing up for our 100th release. Stay tuned...we have something special in store.

Scotty:  FF Has and will continue to be at the forefront of consistent releases. Also adding label compulations, full alblums and multiple track EPs.

Renato: Just keep grinding finding New artist that will fit in the FFM Family. And getting our Main website done and working smooth.

What made you decide to create Record Label?

Timothy:  It just seemed like a natural next step after all our mix series were doing so well. We also owe the idea of starting Funky Flavor Music to Orlando's own breakbeat legend D Xtreme.

Scotty:  Funky Flavor and FFMusic were born to legendary DJ/Producer Rick West. After attending Rick's memorial in Tampa I knew I wanted to continue the Legacy of Rick West and Flavored Beats

Renato:  With a Record Label you can really step up your presence and more Passion to a World wide Platform...Also we can reach out to Talent that might get overlooked. I Enjoy developing and helping new talent that have passion for the Music.  Nobody ever reached out to me as a DJ/Artist...So I try to do the Opposite and give back.

How did you come up with the name?

Timothy:  The name Funky Flavor was the brain child of Scotty after he attended the Rick West memorial party. He wanted to find a way to pay his respect to a legend. Since we already had the branding with Funky Flavor, Funky Flavor Music was an obvious choice for the label name.

What was the first album that you ever bought?

Timothy:  Some random spanish trance track, I cant remember who it was by, but the song title was "Universo"

Scotty:   Master Of Puppets  Metallica

Renato:   Actually It was 3 pieces of Vinyl from Vinyl Frontier Cliff Tangretti sold to me  DynaMix Give The DJ a Break  Bass Bin Twins Green and A1 Love

What album are you most proud of in your label?

Timothy:  Definitely very proud of the Forever West track and all the amazing remixes that came from it.

Scotty:  Forever West  Colombo

Renato:  Heart Player EP  feat. Colombo and Renato Guirao

In your years in the music business, what is the best thing about being involved with it and the worst?

Timothy:  The best part for me is giving new artists the platform to get their music out to the masses. The worst part is that my day job is very hectic and with new releases every week, I try to give every track the promoting they deserve, but sometimes I just cannot.

Scotty:  The Best...is knowing that people I have never met are positively impacted by the music we release.  The Worst....Trying to keep up with the ever changing EDM world...I love all music..Can't listen to it all.

Renato:   Its all good.... when you are involved with something you love:)

What’s your most memorable experience inside the label?

Timothy: Definitely being a part of some really great shows. From our wake N break series of events to big shows like the Reunion. Def looking forward to the Prismatic new years eve party!

Scotty:  When DJ Rob-E called me on Apr1 2015 and asked to do a mix for FF

Renato: Getting to work with Colombo

What does your day-to-day look like?

Timothy:   Busy, Busy, Busy. Did I mention busy?

Scotty:  Music, Mixes, Artist, Producers and the best Music. I would not trade for nothing..I Love It

Renato:  Blessed with NO Stress

When looking into potential new artists to sign, what are some of the qualities that you find exciting

Timothy:  Creativity, good energy, flexability and great attitude.

Scotty:  I would Say the Same...

Renato:  I Agree

Do you have any advice to offer up to incoming artists/djs/bands?

Timothy:  Branding!!!!!!

Scotty:  Yeah ...Know your History, Roots, Do your own thing but don`t be cocky because their is always someone better Take Advice and have Fun

Renato:  Stay Humble and treat people how you would like to be treated   and Learn the word RESPECT

Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about the Records?

Scotty:  Play some Skynard Man!!!!!

Renato:  Two Roads diverged in the wood...and I took the Road less Traveled...

Music Takes Control Original Mix
Can you tell us what your favourite thing is about your  track?

My favorite part about that track besides the hook would be the piano in the breakdown

Can you tell us about new project you will be working on 2017/2018?

Well I am currently working on a few projects, a collaboration with B-Phreak, couple of remixes for a few different labels, starting a duo project with a friend of mine called Pump Pump, and I'm starting my own label Rocksteady Records.

Imagine yourself walking into the studio; please may you talk me through a typical day? What are your habits?

When I hit the studio I like to already have an idea for a track, already know what direction or the feel of the song I want to go with. I find it easier to finish tracks that way.

How do you go about choosing what software and plug-ins you use?

I have my go-to plug -ins that I use in all my tracks. If I see a new plug-in that peeks my interest I will try the demo, and if I feel it's something I will use a lot I will buy it.

What’s the one piece of DJ/production gear you can’t live without?

My PC lol

Any particular artists/dj’s/ producers that really influenced you?

Fixx, Stanton Warriors, Deekline.

How’s the  music scene in this moment in your country?

I would say it's good, some states better than others but for the most part good.

Often particular cities are linked to certain sounds and sub genres. Do you think living in your city is reflected in your music?

I'd like to think so, I always have and always will represent DC, it's home for me. \

Inside BBS Awards - One day with Therabeat Records - Interview

Thanks for your time Therabeat Records! Now that we are almost at the end of 2017,

What are some words you would use to describe this year?

Eye-opening.  The work that goes into running a label can't be overstated.  It's a lot of time and a lot of work.  But worth every minute.  Wouldn't trade it for anything.

What have been some of the highlights for the label?

39 releases in our first year of operation.  Including a couple of top ten releases.

What’s in store for 2018 for
Therabeat Records?

We are opening this label up as a multi-genre label.  More than just breakbeats.  There are some big markets out there and we intend to tackle them hard.

What made you decide to create Record Label?

We did it to create an avenue for ourselves to produce music.  But it turned out to be a label for many new producers to help get their feet off the ground.  A true blessing.

How did you come up with the name?

"Beat Therapy".  Therabeat was an easy transition from that.

What was the first album that you ever bought?

Busy Child by The Crystal Method

What album are you most proud of in your label?

Hard to say.  There have been many proud moments.  I guess hitting the top ten with our very first release practically brought tears to my eyes.  Drop You by Bryan White and Bennystylez

In your years in the music business, what is the best thing about being involved with it and the worst?

I have nothing negative to say about my time in this business.  Networking with new producers and helping get them going has been awesome.  And to have connections with some of the legends in the game is truly remarkable.

What’s your most memorable experience inside the label?

2 weeks after our first release, a DJ that I didn't even know at the time, created a video from a venue he was playing at just to feature our track and call us on out on Facebook on how much he loved it.  This is why we do this.  The emotion was overwhelming.

What does your day-to-day look like?

My day starts at 3:00AM in the studio.  I am a single father of two with a full time job, so I have to get the time in where I can.  Messages and emails when I get home.  I do all the artwork for the covers too.  I'm a busy bastard.

When looking into potential new artists to sign, what are some of the qualities that you find exciting?

Passion.  You can learn music production and the quality will come with each release.  You can't teach passion.

Do you have any advice to offer up to incoming artists/djs/bands?

Accept constructive criticism properly.  And be patient.  It will come with hard work and open ears.  I promise you that.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about the Records?

Thank you all for your continued support.  We have plenty more to come, and we are truly blessed to be part of an amazing community.  Much love to you all.  Namaste

BadboE from Denmark is one of the pioneers and key player in the international nu-funk/ghetto funk scene. With 2 album releases and a dozen EP releases under his belt, he’s now ready to tour the world with his b- boy funky breaks sound. He has released records on all major labels in the NuFunk scene: Bombstrikes (UK), Good Groove (UK), Manmade (GER), Baffin Beat Brigade (USA) and many more as well as remixing tracks for Layo & Bushwacka, Fort Knox Five, Basement Freaks,Omegaman and many others. He’s been DJing in many European cities in England, Germany, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Ukraine as well as San Francisco and New York. He has recently just returned from a one-month regrooved tour in Australia and New Zealand where he rocked cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hobart & Auckland! In 2006 BadboE formed his own record label called Breakbeat Paradise Recordings (BBP Recordings), which has currently released around 50 EPs on digital and 14 vinyls. Since then the ghetto funk scene has come to live and the BBP label is now one of the leaders in this genre.BadboE has been keeping busy releasing his unique flavor of b-boy funk and uptempo partyfunk on his own label and on various other labels. After releasing a few vinyl records in 2007 - the debut EP: "Loose Your Funky Self" and a remix by Break The Box called "Walk out Laughing" the successful EP "Dynamite/Nothing But the Funk" was released in Oct 2008 with remixes from All Good Funk Alliance! This was followed by the successful 4-track Good Groove 11 vinyl that managed to stay at the no. 1 spot on the breakbeat chart for several months. The first full length album “Break The Funk” came out in 2009 followed by remix album “Break The Funk Remixed” in 2010, which both made a big impact to in the Nu Funk scene. A lot or remixes has been coming out on various labels and they have all contributed to settling BadboE’s name in the funky breakbeat scene.BadboE has just released his second album Pump Up The Funk, which has shocked the ghetto funk scene by bringing things to the next level. On this album BadboE is gonna feature vocalist from all over the world and integrate live musical elements from Jazz and Funk musicians. 2 singles has already been released from this album and received major support from all the main DJs and producers in the scene. BadboE has been called a legend and an icon in the ever-growing Ghetto Funk scene and he’s about to tour the world with his funky partyrocking DJ-sets. Stay tuned...

Thanks for your time! Now that we are almost at the end of 2017, what are some words you would use to describe this year?

Thanks for the interest! Its been a good BadboE year with a quite a lot of releases. 2017 has also been a fantastic year for my label Breakbeat Paradise Recordings which has been where I have released most of my music this year. Its been a turbulent year for breaks and bass music - a lot of confused artists out there looking for new genres - which I think is why we at BBP has had good reactions for being consistant and sticking with what we do.

Shake It Off - Vocal Mix
Can you tell us what your favourite thing is about your  track?

This track was produced back in 2016 where it was first release on vinyl and this year made it do a digital release. What we tried to do with this release was to take it back to the roots - and dedicate it to the oldskool hip hop vibes that got us all into breaks in the first place. I was surprised to see how well this release did - by selling out on vinyl and now topping the breakbeat chart on juno. There’s gotta be something about the oldskool breaks that people need :)

Can you tell us about new project you will be working on 2017/2018?

I will continue to focus on the BBP label together and hopefully have a few releases of my own come out during 2018. I’m hoping to team up with some vocalists and have some original songs come out to prepare for an album release at some point.

Imagine yourself walking into the studio; please may you talk me through a typical day? What are your habits?

I like to hit the studio early saturday and really work intense on a track. I have family and work to keep me busy during the week so I need to really be effective once I finally sit down to do music. Depending on how much I get into the session can last into sunday but usually I have everything planned out to where I can knock things out rather quickly. I work on music like its a project and I plan it out and execute it and it works. I dont get much time to experiment with things as I used to but it means I get things done and don’t have a lot of un-finished songs sitting around.

How do you go about choosing what software and plug-ins you use?

I use a old tracking software similar to the protracker and fasttracker from the Amiga days. Thats how I got started and still the best way for me to work with hundreds of samples and still not loose overview. The tool Im on right now is called Renoise and it offers a good blend of that old tracker look and feel but still offers VST and Midi support so I can use the Massive plugin etc.

What’s the one piece of DJ/production gear you can’t live without?

For DJing to me its all about the Serato - and with the Novation Dicers you can still work the functions via buttons so you dont have to be over the computer all the time. Production wise I’m not too depending on gear - more on software - the plugins and samples are what gives me the quickest and best output of my ideas.

Any particular artists/dj’s/ producers that really influenced you?

I started out in around the big beat days in the mid 90s. So the influences is on the breaks pioneers like The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and of course Fat Boy Slim.

How’s the  music scene in this moment in your country?

I am living in Florida right now so there is not much of the type of breaks I do going around here.

Often particular cities are linked to certain sounds and sub genres. Do you think living in your city is reflected in your music?

Not really - all though being in the states has given me access to a lot of awesome soul and funk music to sample from.
